Seven Practical Steps for More Sustainable Laundry

Sustainable laundry is not declared complete when a product is purchased.

One laundry involves clothing, cleaning products, water, electricity, machinery, drying or drying, and packaging and transportation. Ordinary people do not need to make complex calculations, but can start with seven high-frequency operations: washing, reasonable loading, partial pre-treatment, as required, choosing the right water temperature, reducing the need for drying and making clothing longer.

The capacity of the different types of aircraft and the recommended loading methods vary. The washing machine instructions can be read and then the appropriate load can be found by day-to-day observation: there is room for clothing to move and the door can be easily closed without pressure.

3. Locally, first, so that the whole load is not paid for a stain

A shirt with only a collar is obvious, and a large amount of detergent is often not the best way to add to the whole barrel when a pair of pants is only a little oil stain.

The identification of stains and fabrics, followed by local pre-treatment, can reduce repeat washing and overuse. The more timely the treatment is, the easier it is; however, the different ways in which blood, protein, oil and color stains are required, and the temperature of water cannot be generalized.

Before experimenting with new methods, the colours and changes in the fabrics are tested without visibility.

4. Access to clothing without foam

Too little use of cleaning products may affect the effect of washing, and too much use may increase the burden of drifting, waste products, and even make clothing less attractive.

It is better to choose not excessive temperatures, provided that they are clean and meet the requirements of fabric and hygiene.

6. Reduction of unnecessary drying when naturally drying

Drying is convenient and valuable in the event of wet weather, insufficient space or special sanitation needs. However, clothing suitable for natural drying does not have to be dried at high temperatures for long periods of time.

Stay ventilated while drying, remove clothes in a timely manner, and avoid the smell of prolonged wet piles. When drying is required, dehydration, filtering, selection of suitable fabric and avoidance of excessive drying is required.

Inclusion of “further dressed” in laundry targets

Laundry should not only be for this moment of cleanliness, but should also help to keep clothes longer.

A piece of clothing wears more time and is usually closer to the idea of sustainable life than the constant pursuit of new “environmentally friendly items”.

So, is the cleaning product important?

Of course it’s important, but it should be compared in the whole system.

When looking at a product, you can ask:

  1. What is the standard quantity and is it easily accessible and accurate?
  2. Can daily stains be cleaned in the appropriate procedure?
  3. Are content functions, scope of application and attention publicly available?
  4. What is the composition of the packaging and is there a physical disposal path in place?
  5. Are there objects, conditions and grounds for conclusions such as “vegetative foundation, degradable, unplastic”?
  6. Does the product help to reduce repeat washing or does it appear light in advertising only?
