If clothes still smell after washing, we check when and where the smell appears before changing detergent. A whole load that smells musty, one top with persistent underarm odour and clothes that smell only after cupboard storage need different checks. Natural laundry powder, liquid detergent or a stronger fragrance cannot replace that distinction.

Measure the dose before increasing or reducing it
Our supplied level scoop holds approximately 10–15 g of laundry powder. It is not a fixed dose for every load. Use the pack directions for the actual clothing, soil level and water conditions. Too little product can leave soil behind; excess can make rinsing harder. Neither “always use less” nor “add another scoop” is a complete answer.
If last time’s amount was a guess, make the next wash repeatable. Use the same supplied scoop, level it, or record a weighed amount. Our dosing guide explains how to separate scoop weight from the amount your load needs.
Check the time between washing, drying and storage
We suggest running the machine when you can unload it. In wet weather, allow for ventilation, dehumidification or tumble drying where the care label permits it. Before storage, check waistbands, cuffs and layered seams, not just the outer surface.
Clothes that have developed a musty smell after sitting wet need attention before storage; rewash according to their care instructions and dry promptly. If the problem appears only in the cupboard, inspect the storage conditions too. Repeatedly changing the detergent dose will not address a damp cupboard.
If the washer smells, inspect the washer
Use the appliance manual to check the door seal, dispenser and accessible maintenance areas. Follow the model’s cleaning cycle and cleaner instructions rather than mixing cleaning products. Whirlpool’s front-loader odour guidance discusses both wet laundry left inside and buildup in the machine.
Ventilation after use must also fit the machine instructions and household safety, especially around children and pets. Drainage errors, leaks or a burning smell are reasons to contact appliance support, not keep experimenting with laundry powder.
Choose a product for the wash, not to hide the smell

What should I check first if clothes still smell after washing?
We record where the smell occurs and when it appears. Whole-load mustiness points to checks of damp waiting time, washer condition and drying; a local sweat smell calls for a fabric-specific check; odour after storage calls for checking dryness and the cupboard.
Will a more fragrant laundry powder solve the smell?
Scent preference is separate from cleaning. A different fragrance cannot replace checks of dose, local soil, washer condition and drying. Our essential-oil variants still need to be used within their stated directions.
Can I put away clothes that became musty while sitting wet?
Rewash affected clothes according to their care instructions and dry them promptly rather than masking the smell before storage. Check thicker seams and waistbands as well as the surface before putting clothes away.
