Why Towels Turn Stiff or Smelly and How to Wash Them

When towels become stiff after washing with natural laundry powder, we do not automatically change detergent or cut the dose. Check visible deposits, fabric-softener use, water conditions and drying. Stiffness, slower absorption and a musty smell are different observations, and may need different next steps.

Start with the change you can actually describe

What you notice Our next check
Powder specks or local white marks Measured dose, drawer clumps, placement and rinsing
Slower absorption after regular softener use The towel’s care label and conditioning routine
Several towels become rough after moving home Water supply, washer settings and drying changes together
A musty smell while damp Hanging, waiting before washing, washer condition and drying

We use the pattern to organise checks, not diagnose the cause by touch. Moving home may change the washer and drying space as well as the water. Follow our hard-water laundry guide for water information, or our clothes-smell-after-washing guide for odour.

Dose for the load, not the number of towels

Our supplied level scoop holds approximately 10–15 g. Two small face cloths and two thick bath towels do not create the same load just because there are two items. Follow the pack guidance for the actual laundry, soil and water conditions, and the machine’s loading instructions.

If the last dose was a guess, record level scoops or a weighed amount next time. Visible powder deserves a placement and rinsing check; a uniformly rough towel without specks also calls for reviewing water, conditioning and drying. Our dosing guide and residue guide cover those separate questions.

Soft to touch is not the only goal

We want a towel to take up water, not simply feel conditioned. Whirlpool’s towel-care guide notes that coatings from fabric softener or dryer sheets can affect absorbency, and detergent excess can build up. Review the towel instructions before adding another conditioning step.

Laundry soap, detergent powder and fabric softener do different jobs. Our coconut-oil laundry soap is an option for compatible local pretreatment; that does not mean covering every towel with soap before machine washing. See our soap and powder comparison for product roles.

Match washing and drying to the whole towel

We check fibre content, edging and decorative details together. A cotton bath towel and a microfibre towel may need different settings. Use the care label for the whole item rather than assuming every towel tolerates the same hot-wash routine.

Spread towels out after use and allow room for drying. If space is limited, stagger loads instead of crowding thick towels together. Check they are fully dry before storing. When tumble drying is permitted, remove them when dry instead of extending the heat unnecessarily; Whirlpool also cautions against overdrying.

Choosing our powder for everyday towel care

Rooftop Garden is one option to explore for compatible everyday family laundry. Tranquil Field focuses on the laundry needs of households with babies and older adults, including suitable towels and bedding. The variants differ in formulation priorities and scent; they are not separate “towel-softening” grades. Both contain essential oils.

Check our product information before choosing, then use where to buy for current channels. If a towel is already thin, shedding heavily or fraying, washing will not rebuild the fibres. Consider replacement when appropriate care no longer leaves it fit for continued use, rather than escalating the cleaning routine indefinitely.

Common questions

Should I immediately reduce powder when towels turn stiff?

Check whether the measured dose exceeds the pack guidance first. We also review placement, loading, water, conditioning and drying. Stiffness alone is not a reason to keep reducing the dose or assume a new detergent is needed.

Does washing two towels require one scoop of natural laundry powder?

The number of towels is not a dose guide. Face cloths and thick bath towels make different loads. Follow the pack instructions for laundry, soil and water conditions. Our supplied level scoop holds approximately 10–15 g, not a fixed two-towel dose.

Should I add more fabric softener to rough towels?

Not automatically. Conditioning can affect absorbency, so check the care label and existing routine. We also review dose, water and drying rather than judging the wash only by softness.
